Mets' Luis Severino gives important update despite injury fears

New York Mets starting pitcher Luis Severino was dealing with an injury in his last game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Although the main story of that game was Edwin Diaz's terrible performance, Severino's night was also very noteworthy.

In the third inning, Severino was hit in the leg by a comebacker by Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll, made the out at first base, and then began limping around the mound while trying to shake off the ball. He stayed in the game until the fifth inning, striking out nine batters but allowing three runs after being hit by the ball, finishing the game with four earned runs in 4.2 innings.

After the game, Severino said he was having a harder time pushing off with his leg and that he was in a lot of pain. Fortunately for the veteran, the X-rays were negative and he is absolutely certain he will make his next scheduled start.

The Mets cannot afford to lose Severino for any length of time. The 30-year-old right-hander has been very important for the Amazins this season, leading the team in innings and has a 3.96 ERA. The Mets have won nine of his last 15 starts and face the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers in a series at the end of the regular season. They will need Sevy for this matchup and many more to come.

The loss to the Diamondbacks is truly brutal for the Mets, who are in the thick of the National League wild card race. The D-Backs are one of the frontrunners in the wild card race. With a record of 69-64 after the latest loss, the Mets are trying to fight their way into the postseason. They are four games out of a playoff spot.
