Suspect in Laurel shooting, late night, found dead after car collision in Jones Co.

LAUREL, Mississippi (WDAM) – A suspect in an overnight shooting in Laurel is dead after a car crash in Jones County.

According to Laurel police, officers responded to a call reporting shots fired at the South Park Village apartments around 11:58 p.m. Monday.

According to LPD, it was reported that a suspect fired more than 20 shots from a handgun following a disturbance in the area.

According to police, no injuries were reported.

On Tuesday at 12:14 a.m., LPD officers were dispatched to the scene of a crash and were notified by the Jones County Sheriff's Department of a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Luther Hill Road and Glade Paulding Road.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was identified as a suspect in the shooting and reportedly died in the accident.

According to LPD, a handgun of the same caliber used in the shooting was recovered from the destroyed vehicle.

The suspect's identity is being kept secret as the family is currently being notified.

LPD thanked JCSD for their assistance in the investigation.
