RFK Jr. targeted by environmental group after dead whale head story resurfaces

RFK Jr. targeted by environmental group after dead whale head story resurfaces

A left-leaning environmental group this week is seizing on a 2012 story about Robert F. Kennedy Jr. transporting part of a whale carcass across state lines for criminal prosecution.

The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund cited a 2012 interview with Town and Country Magazine that Kennedy's daughter, Kick Kennedy, gave. In the interview, Kick describes how her father cut off the head of a dead whale and strapped it to the roof of their car before driving from a Massachusetts beach to Mount Kisco, New York.

The center states that the animal is protected by the Marine Mammal and Endangered Species Administration, so possession of any part of it is illegal.

They also claim that it was likely a serious violation of the Lacey Act of 1900, “which prohibits the transportation of any wild animal, dead or alive, acquired in violation of any state, federal or international regulation or law,” the group told Axios.

Representatives for Kennedy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Kick recalled in the interview how her father heard that a dead whale was lying on the shore of Squaw Island in Hyannis Port when she was six years old. She said her father, who was interested in studying animals, went to the site with a chainsaw, severed the head and tied it to the roof of his car with a bungee cord.

“Every time we accelerated on the highway, whale juice would run into the windows of the car and it was the most disgusting thing in the world,” Kick told the magazine, saying the incident happened sometime around 1994.

“We all had plastic bags over our heads with holes cut in them for our mouths, and people on the highway gave us the middle finger, but that was just normal everyday life for us,” she added.

The center did not immediately respond to questions from Fox News Digital about whether the group has contacted law enforcement. A letter from the group, obtained by Axios, calls on Kennedy to hand over any animal remains in his possession.

The group is the political action wing of the Center for Biological Diversity and touts its support for Vice President Kamala Harris on the landing page of its website.

The resurfaced story comes just days after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsed former President Donald Trump.

“The 2024 election is critical for the future of the environment. That's why we endorsed Kamala Harris for president and are working with our progressive partners to elect climate champions across the ballot,” the group wrote.
