AFC Richmond may not have played its last game yet.

According to multiple reports, there could be a fourth season of “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV+. Warner Bros. Television has optioned stars Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Swift, signaling the studio's intention to bring the actors back for another season, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, Variety and The Wrap reported. The trio played the roles of Rebecca Welton, Roy Kent and Leslie Higgins in the acclaimed comedy about an American coach (Jason Sudeikis) who is hired to manage an English soccer team.

Deadline was the first to report the news.

While season 4 of “Ted Lasso” has not yet been officially announced, reports say Warner Bros. Television will next contact the other stars of the series to finalize new contracts. Sudeikis is said to already be involved as an executive producer, Variety reported. Production on season 4 could begin in early 2025, Deadline and The Wrap reported.

The news came as a surprise, as it was expected that the final episode of season 3 of “Ted Lasso” would also be the last of the series. In the finale in May 2023, Jason Sudeikis' title character left AFC Richmond and returned to the United States, seemingly bringing his story to an end.

Members of the “Ted Lasso” creative team also said that they envisioned the series as a series with a story arc spanning three seasons.

“We always intended it to be three seasons,” producer and star Brendan Hunt previously told Entertainment Weekly. “I think it would be pretty cool if, given the popularity of this show, we stayed true to all of our beliefs and really only did three seasons. But as much as Jason may have championed that idea, none of us were prepared for the extent to which people love this show.”

But Apple TV+ did not promote Season 3 as the series' last, and Sudeikis and his colleagues were very coy about whether “Ted Lasso” would end until the finale. When Sudeikis was asked at the 2022 Emmys if Season 3 was the end, he was evasive: “It depends on more factors than myself,” he said.

Review: Don't worry, season 3 of Ted Lasso will bring bright light into your dark world

Earlier this month, co-creator Bill Lawrence told Collider that the future of the show still depends on Sudeikis.

“As fans, we would all kill for it to start again, but we would all say the same thing, which is: Whatever Jason wants to do and whatever his decision is, we're all in,” he told the entertainment news website.

“Ted Lasso” premiered in 2020, a year after the launch of Apple TV+, and quickly became one of the streaming service’s most acclaimed shows. The series’ first and second seasons won two consecutive Emmys for Best Comedy Series, with Sudeikis, Goldstein and Waddingham also receiving Emmys for their performances.

However, critical reaction to the third season was more muted than to the first two. USA TODAY television critic Kelly Lawler wrote that the season suffered from “long, boring episodes, poor characterization, poor plotting and a general lack of focus.” Season 3 lost the Emmy for best comedy series to the first season of “The Bear.”
